The Fiber Glass Secret: Why “Chemical-Free” Mattresses Still Harm You
Many mattress companies claim they do not use harmful chemicals. However, these claims are often misleading. Even if a company uses wool, they often treat that wool with fire retardant chemicals or have a chemical laced flame barrier fabric under the wool. You cannot escape government fire regulations without using materials that may harm your health.
The Nectar Warning Label Mystery
A customer contacted us after watching our “2026 Complete Mattress Education” video. He worried about his new Nectar mattress after reading a startling warning label. The label forbids removing the cover for any reason.
The warning states that removing the cover “voids the warranty” and “compromises the integrity” of the bed. It even commands users not to sit, sleep, or stand on the mattress if the cover is missing. Why is Nectar so afraid of you seeing what is inside?
The Law Label Reveals the Truth
The answer lies on the mattress law label. The label clearly lists “Glass Fiber… 23%”. This fiber glass is the reason for the intense warnings.
Removing the cover allows tiny glass shards to escape into your home. These fibers can enter your ductwork, clothing, and furniture. More dangerously, you can breathe them into your lungs. Nectar’s own label warns that this can cause “serious injury, death, and property damage”.
Silica Fibers vs. Fiber Glass
When we contacted Nectar, they claimed to use “silica fibers” instead of the word “fiberglass”. They also highlighted their CertiPUR-US® certification. They claim their foam lacks formaldehyde, heavy metals, and VOCs.
However, they admitted in an email that they use a “fire-retardant knit sock”. They claim this protects consumers without “harmful chemicals”. Using dangerous fiber glass to avoid chemicals makes no sense for your safety.
The Problem with “Proprietary” Methods and Wool
Many companies now claim to meet fire standards using wool or “proprietary” methods. If wool could naturally pass these tests, no company would risk using cheap fiber glass.
The truth is that natural wool burns. To pass federal tests, manufacturers must treat the wool with fire-retardant chemicals or use a chemical laden sock under the wool. They simply do not tell the consumer the whole story.
How to Avoid Stupid Government Regulations
There is no mattress that meets flame standards without using something harmful. This is why we change our approach. We provide the high-quality materials you need to build your own mattress. By doing this, you can avoid the regulations that force toxins or glass into your sleeping environment.
