Formaldehyde Known human carcinogen
Released by the adhesives that bond foam layers together.
Studies of exposed workers found it causes myeloid leukemia, and nasopharyngeal and sinonasal cancers. The National Toxicology Program lists it as known to be a human carcinogen; IARC places it in Group 1.
National Cancer InstituteAntimony trioxide Anticipated human carcinogen
Flame retardant. Named by the CPSC as a chemical used in mattresses to meet the burn standard.
The National Toxicology Program concluded in 2018 it is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. Inhalation caused lung tumors in rats and mice, adrenal tumors in female rats, and lymphatic tumors. IARC Group 2B.
NTP Report on CarcinogensDecabromodiphenyl oxide EPA restricted
Brominated flame retardant. Also named by the CPSC as used in mattresses.
Evidence of liver toxicity, thyroid toxicity and neurodevelopmental toxicity. The EPA restricted it under federal chemicals law as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. It builds up in the body rather than clearing.
US EPA, TSCAPerfluorocarbons (PFAS) Forever chemical
Applied for stain and moisture resistance.
The EPA links PFAS exposure to kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, liver disease and a weakened immune response. In 2024 it set the first national drinking-water limits for them.

A third chemical the CPSC names as used in mattresses to pass the burn test.
IARC classifies it as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on sufficient evidence in animal studies.

Softeners used in waterproof and moisture-resistant covers.
The CPSC permanently banned several from children’s toys and childcare articles after finding effects on male reproductive development. The same compounds are not restricted in the bed you sleep on.

It is the foam that gives out
Roughly 99% of mattresses sold today are built with plastic foam, and plastic foam is the part that fails. A body impression is not a defect that appears one morning. It builds over years under the same few square feet of weight. On a foam mattress it is typically there by year five.
Latex does not break down that way, and ours is built in separate layers. If one ever softens, that layer is replaced, not the mattress. It is the difference between owning something repairable and owning something disposable.

Fire Retardants
How they pass the burn test is the whole story.
The law says it must not burn
Federal flammability standards apply to every mattress sold in the country. The rule is reasonable. What it does not say is how you must meet it, so manufacturers meet it the cheapest way available.
Nobody has to tell you what they used
The barrier is not itemized anywhere a buyer can read it. Ask a salesperson what is in it and most genuinely do not know.

The Mattress Industry
Evidence, not assertion.
Mattress shopping feels dishonest because the prices are set to be discounted for Holiday Specials and Sales. When you do the research, you find the review sites are frequently owned by, or affiliates of, the companies being reviewed. And the warranty, the document that is supposed to protect you, is usually written to exclude the exact failure you are most likely to have.
Warning: “natural”, “organic”, or “100 percent latex”
may not mean what you think. Unless it is certified GOLS, what you are getting may not be the pure sap of the rubber tree.
The loophole almost nobody knows about
“Natural” is not a regulated claim. Synthetic latex that contains some natural ingredients can legally be sold as natural latex. So can synthetic blended with a portion of organic. Both cost less to make. Both wear out sooner.
GOLS is the certification that proves it’s organic. It means the latex came directly from the sap of the tree, verifiable by a third party rather than asserted by the seller. That is the whole reason we carry it.

Questions people actually ask
When should I replace my mattress?
If you wake up sore or tired, if it is worn, lumpy or sagging, if you have started sleeping on the couch, if your partner is having a rough time, or if you cannot remember when you bought it, it is time. Most people wait years longer than they should.
Why do you not offer a 100-night free trial?
Because nothing is truly free. Companies that refund your money have to cover that loss somewhere, and the only way is enormous margins, which means building the bed out of cheap foam. That foam often fails within two years, softens, and develops deep body impressions. You throw it away and buy another one. We would rather put the money into the materials.
So what happens if the firmness is wrong?
You get a free layer exchange inside 60 days. Wait at least 20 days first so your body adjusts, then call us and we will send a new layer of your choice at no charge. You cover only the shipping. One exchange per mattress, and you keep the bed you already have.
Do you take mattresses back?
No, and we will be straight about why. A mattress is a personal item, like clothing. Once it has been in a home we cannot resell it. So instead of returns we fix the bed you have. It also means you never have to box up and ship a mattress back to anyone.
How do I know which firmness to choose?
We talk it through with you. We ask your height, your weight, what you sleep on now, where it hurts and how you like it to feel, then recommend an arrangement. That conversation is the whole reason people get it right the first time.
