Are Sales Real? Or are they Marketing Gimmicks?

the difference between a mattress fake deal ($3400 marked down to $1700) and a real deal ($1700 everyday fair price). A confused customer is on the left; a happy customer shaking hands with an honest expert is on the right.

The Truth About “Special Deals” and Mattress Sales

A man recently visited me to find a new mattress. He had owned a memory foam model for about six or seven years. The foam had softened so much that it no longer supported him.

Interestingly, he wasn’t upset about the short lifespan of the mattress. He believed he had received a “special deal” from a friend. This friend managed a Schewels furniture store and offered the mattress at “half price.” The man paid $1,700 for a bed that supposedly retailed for $3,400.

Exposing the Fake Discount

Since I previously sold those same name brands, I asked for the details. He couldn’t remember the brand, but his description sounded familiar. I asked if it was a Spring Air Sleep Fitness 307. He confirmed that it was.

I had to tell him the truth. I sold that exact model every day for $1,700. It never sold for $3,400. By sharing this, I exposed a hard reality: his friend lied to him. He didn’t get a fantastic deal. He simply paid the regular everyday price.

Are Mattress Sales Actually Real?

The short answer is no. Most stores mark products up just to mark them down later. This tactic creates the appearance of a massive sale.

Retailers use these “savings events” to ramp up business during holidays. They want to pressure you into making a hasty decision. However, the store makes the same profit every week, whether they advertise a sale or not.

The Myth of the 80% Off Sale

You might see signs near a Mattress Warehouse advertising “50-80% off.” Their website often shows a perpetual sale as well. Think about the logic behind those numbers.

If a customer buys a mattress for $2,000, could they really get it for $400 by just waiting a week? This never happens in the mattress industry. A $400 mattress and a $2,000 mattress are completely different products.
