Do Latex Mattresses Need to be Flipped?

If you’re thinking about switching to a latex mattress, you might be wondering if it’s necessary to flip the mattress. According to our mattress company roanoke, latex mattresses are a lot less rigid than traditional innerspring beds and that makes them harder to maneuver. However, to answer the question of whether latex mattresses need to be flipped, we’ll examine some of the different types of latex mattresses and their construction, as well as reasons for flipping mattresses.

Two Types of Latex Mattresses

There are several ways companies make latex mattresses that will affect how easily they can be handled, so we will examine all of them. All have advantages and disadvantages, with all latex being the most difficult to handle for flipping. Hybrid being the most common form and all latex being the least common alternative. So, let’s look at the difference between these two popular choices.

Hybrid Latex Mattresses

One of the most important aspects of a latex mattress is its reputation for durability. These mattresses are made of rubber tree foam which is far more durable than polyurethane, or plastic, foam. 100% pure rubber mattresses are known as the most durable type. But today, most companies are making them as hybrids, meaning partially springs and partially latex. And interestingly, if the latex is pure, it will outlast the steel springs. However, since the springs have a shorter life than natural latex, most hybrid producers are using synthetic blended latex, which means these mattresses will have a much shorter life. But for our discussion here about flipping the mattress, hybrids typically are one sided so rotating is the only option. But because they are more rigid from having springs, they are easier to handle.

All Latex Mattresses

Mattresses made of all latex, no springs, is much less prevalent. The reason is real simple, they are more expensive. These can come in all synthetic latex or real latex with the obvious difference, real is more expensive than synthetic. Either way, for our discussion here, all rubber mattresses without springs are very difficult to handle for flipping and rotating. So, there is a tradeoff, durability of all rubber mattresses or the easy of handling of a hybrid mattress.

Why Is Mattress Flipping on Traditional Mattresses Necessary?

Mattresses go through cycles of use; used for a short space of time followed by excessive “fluffing” and then a return to flatness. So, is it necessary to flip a mattress in order to keep it soft and comfortable? Well, it depends on the type of mattress.

Some people will argue that rotating or flipping a mattress is a waste of time. The coils can get worn or misshapen on traditional springs. This will make the mattress feel lumpy and uncomfortable. Over time, you’ll begin to notice that the edges of your mattress seem to be sagging in and not as springy as they used to be. In addition, you may have discovered that it’s difficult for you to move around on the bed, for example, when getting out of bed in the morning.

Also, traditional mattresses would form a “pit” at the center, drawing you in when you sleep and preventing the even utilization of your mattress. In such situations, flipping provides a less-used side of the mattress that is more even and comfortable to sleep in. However, this also means that traditional mattresses wear out relatively fast and may need more frequent replacing to ensure comfort in your sleep.

We as Sleep Essentials have a solution to the difficulty of flipping.

Flipping a mattress is a pain either if it is hybrid or all latex. But we made this process easy even for all latex. Since our latex comes in layers that are not glued together, you can flip only the top layer without having to move the whole mattress. Each layer is only three inches thick so even in a king size, a three inch layer is easy to handle, AND it can be flipped or rotated. Flipping and rotating the top layer about twice a year is good practice for longevity.

These mattresses are made from the sap of rubber trees, Hevea Brasiliensis. and have higher edges that wrap around your body to allow air circulation underneath. In addition, they tend to bounce back to shape faster than other mattress types. While they may not sag, they will still get slightly softer as you sleep on them. In fact, latex mattresses tend to last 20-25 years without displaying a significant change in softness or comfort.

How Often Should You Flip Your Mattress?

As already noted, you should flip/rotate your top layer about twice a year. You can do this to enhance your mattress’s durability. Therefore, if you flip your top layer regularly, you can extend how long it will last by a few years.

We have looked at some of the most common questions about flipping mattresses and answered them in detail. Hopefully, you now understand why mattress flipping is necessary on a traditional mattress. If you are trying to decide whether or not you need to flip your mattress, then it’s a good idea to learn about the different types of mattresses available. Surprisingly, there are plenty of options other than traditional memory foam and spring mattresses.
