What Is Inside a Mattress

A mattress has to meet a federal flammability standard, and the usual way to meet it is chemistry. The Consumer Product Safety Commission published its own list of fire retardant chemicals that may be incorporated in mattresses to meet that standard. Three of them are on the list below. Nobody is required to tell you which one is in your bed. These pages do two things. They name the compound, and they name who classified it. That is as far as the science goes, and that is as far as we go. We do not tell you what any particular mattress did to anyone.
