Wyoming King Bed: Dimensions, Sizes and Custom Firmness
A Wyoming King bed is an oversized bed that measures 84 inches wide by 84 inches long. That is 8 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a standard King, and because the width and the length are the same number, a Wyoming King is square.
Sleep Essentials builds mattresses to order in Roanoke, Virginia, and the Wyoming King is one of several oversized sizes we make. The reason this page exists is simple. Very few companies build beds this large at all, and almost none of the ones that do will let you choose how firm the mattress feels. We do both. You pick the size, and you pick the firmness of every layer inside it.
Oversized bed sizes compared
Before you shop for a frame, a foundation or sheets, it helps to see the real numbers next to each other. These are the standard industry measurements for each size.
| Size | Width | Length | Shape in short |
|---|---|---|---|
| King | 76 inches | 80 inches | The normal large bed |
| California King | 72 inches | 84 inches | Narrower but longer than King |
| Wyoming King | 84 inches | 84 inches | Square |
| Florida King | 80 inches | 90 inches | Wider and 10 inches longer than King |
| Texas King | 80 inches | 98 inches | The long one |
| Family King | 108 inches | 108 inches | The largest, square |
One note on naming before you keep shopping. Some sellers list a 108 by 108 inch bed as an Alaskan King. Sleep Essentials builds this footprint and calls it a Family King. If you have been measuring for 108 by 108, Family King is the size you want from us.
If you want to see these sizes against the ordinary ones in one place, our side by side mattress comparison chart lays out every size we build.
Who each oversized size suits
Wyoming King, 84 by 84 inches
The Wyoming King is for width. Two adults get 42 inches each, which is more than a twin bed apiece, and nobody has to negotiate the middle. It is the size people land on when the problem is not height but elbow room: a partner who sprawls, a dog that sleeps between you, or small children who end up in your bed most mornings. A wyoming king mattress is also the easiest of the very large sizes to fit into a normal bedroom, because it only adds 8 inches of width over a King and takes less floor length than a Texas King.
Texas King, 80 by 98 inches
A texas king bed is the one to look at if someone in the bed is tall. At 98 inches long it gives 18 inches more length than a King and 14 inches more than a California King. That matters at 6 foot 4 and up, and it matters even at average height if you sleep with your feet hanging toward the end of the bed. A texas king mattress needs a long room, so measure the floor before you commit. We also build the layers in a Texas King (Tall) size for deeper builds.
Florida King, 80 by 90 inches
The Florida King sits between the two. It adds 4 inches of width and 10 inches of length over a King, so it answers both complaints at once without taking the floor length a Texas King needs. A florida king mattress is often the practical answer for a couple where one person is tall and the other wants room to move.
Family King, 108 by 108 inches
At 9 feet by 9 feet, the Family King is a room decision as much as a bed decision. People buy it to sleep as a household: two adults, young children and often a dog, in one bed, with nobody on the edge. A family king mattress will usually need the bedroom planned around it, and it will almost certainly need a foundation that goes together in pieces, which is covered below.
King and California King
We still build both of the familiar sizes, and plenty of people who start out looking at an oversized king mattress end up ordering a King or a Split King once they measure the room. A King is 76 by 80 inches. A California King is 72 by 84 inches, which means it is actually narrower than a King and 4 inches longer.
Why these sizes are so hard to find
Oversized beds are not rare because nobody wants them. They are rare because they break a factory’s tooling and a retailer’s warehouse at the same time. A standard mattress line is set up to cut, quilt and compress one set of widths. Going past a King width means new cutting, new covers, and freight that no longer fits a normal pallet or a normal delivery van. Most manufacturers decline the whole category rather than retool for it, and most of the few that accept it will sell you exactly one firmness, because a single recipe is the only way they can keep it simple.
That has three knock-on effects you should plan for.
- Frames. A bed frame for a Wyoming King, Texas King, Florida King or Family King is a specialty item. Check the inside measurement of the frame rather than the name printed on the box, because some sellers use these size names loosely.
- Foundations. A one piece foundation this large will not go up most staircases or around most landings. That is why we sell a Self-Assembled Mattress Foundation, which ships flat and is put together in the room. It comes in Wyoming King, Texas King, Florida King, Family King, King, California King and the smaller sizes, in 5 inch, 8 inch and 11 inch heights, with or without legs.
- Sheets. Ordinary King sheets will not fit any of these beds. You need bedding cut for the actual size. We carry Ocochi Premier Bamboo Sheet Sets so that question is answered at the same time as the mattress.
Adjustable bases are the fourth piece. We carry Southerland Sleep adjustable bed bases in the G94, G96 and B26 models, which is the route to take if you want the head or the feet to raise on a bed this size.
How a layered latex build makes a custom size possible
The reason we can build a Wyoming King when a factory line cannot is that we do not build a sealed mattress. We build a stack.
Every mattress is a Top Layer, a Middle Layer and a Bottom Layer inside a Cover. Each layer is ordered separately, and each one is ordered in a firmness: Ultra Soft, Soft, Medium Soft, Medium, Medium Firm or Ultra Firm. The Cover comes in a Standard 9 Inch depth or a Deep 12 Inch depth, depending on how thick you want the finished bed to be.
Because the layers are separate pieces, an unusual width becomes a cutting question instead of a factory question. The same three layer logic that builds a King builds a Wyoming King or a Texas King. It also means the bed is not a one time decision. If the top layer turns out softer than you expected after a few weeks, the layer is the part that changes, not the whole mattress. It is worth reading what latex does well and where it falls short before you choose your firmnesses, and how long a latex mattress lasts if you are weighing it against a spring bed.
If you would rather not pick three firmnesses from scratch, we also sell four pre-arranged recipes. Arrangement Recommendation 1 through 4, which we list as AR1, AR2, AR3 and AR4, are set stacks of organic latex layers, offered in Split Florida King, Split Family King, Split Texas King and Split Wyoming King, in 9 inch and 12 inch thickness. They are the shortcut for a buyer who wants a known starting point rather than a blank page.
One point of honesty about materials. The latex components we use carry their own certification. That certification belongs to the latex itself, not to the assembled bed, so we describe what we build as a latex mattress made with organic latex rather than putting a certification on the finished product.
Why split firmness matters most at these widths
A Split size means the mattress is made as two halves instead of one piece. At these widths that is the main reason people buy.
Think about what 84 or 108 inches of width actually is. It is two separate sleeping positions with a seam between them that neither person reaches during the night. When a couple disagrees about firmness, and most couples do, a one piece bed forces an average that suits nobody. A split bed does not. One half can be Soft on top and the other Medium Firm, built in the same cover depth, finished at the same height, in the same bed.
We offer splits across the oversized range: Split Wyoming King, Split Texas King, Split Florida King, Split Florida King XL, Split Family King, Split Family King XLXW, plus Split King and Split California King. A split build is also easier to carry up stairs, which on a bed this size is not a small detail.
The second practical benefit is that a split bed works with two adjustable bases, so one person can raise the head of their own half without moving the other person at all.
You can see the whole range of our oversized mattress sizes in one place, or go straight to pick your layers and cover depth if you already know the size you need. If you are not sure what your room will take, call us and give us the floor measurements before you order anything.
Common questions about oversized beds
What are the dimensions of a Wyoming King bed?
84 inches wide by 84 inches long. It is a square bed, 8 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a standard King, and 12 inches wider than a California King.
Is a Wyoming King bigger than a Texas King?
It is wider but much shorter. A Wyoming King is 84 inches wide and 84 inches long. A Texas King is 80 inches wide and 98 inches long. Choose the Wyoming King if you need width, and the Texas King if you need length for a tall sleeper.
Can two people in the same bed have different firmness?
Yes, if you order a Split size. A Split mattress is built as two halves, so each half gets its own layer firmnesses chosen from Ultra Soft, Soft, Medium Soft, Medium, Medium Firm or Ultra Firm. We offer this in Split Wyoming King, Split Texas King, Split Florida King and Split Family King, among others.
Will a Wyoming King fit on my existing bed frame or foundation?
No. A King frame is 76 inches wide, so it is 8 inches too narrow. You will need a frame built for the size and a foundation to match. Our Self-Assembled Mattress Foundation ships flat and is assembled in the bedroom, which avoids the problem of getting a 7 foot wide one piece foundation up a staircase. It comes in 5 inch, 8 inch and 11 inch heights, with or without legs.
What is the difference between a Family King and an Alaskan King?
They describe the same 108 by 108 inch footprint. Different sellers use different names for it. Sleep Essentials builds and sells this size as a Family King, so that is the name to order under here.
Do I need special sheets for these sizes?
Yes. King sheets will not stretch to a Wyoming King, Texas King, Florida King or Family King, and a fitted sheet that is too small will pull off the corners every night. Order bedding cut for the size at the same time as the mattress. We carry Ocochi Premier Bamboo Sheet Sets for this reason.
